Why You’re Not Making Progress (Even Though You’re Doing Everything Right)

Let’s get one thing straight: the problem isn’t you.

You’ve got the color-coded planner. The productivity app. The action steps laid out. You’ve told yourself a hundred times, This time, I’m really doing it.

And yet? Still stuck. Still circling the same goals. Still wondering why your effort isn’t adding up.

Here’s the truth: if you’re doing everything “right” and still not moving forward, it’s not because you’re unmotivated. It’s because something deeper is at play—and it’s trying to get your attention.

Let’s break down 5 common reasons you aren’t making progress.

1. You’re chasing someone else’s dream

If you feel foggy or weirdly unmotivated, it might be because your goal isn’t actually yours. Maybe it was at one point. Or maybe it never was, but you thought it was the right thing to do. Sometimes it comes from our parents. Sometimes our bosses. Other times, it can come from what we think makes a good wife/mother/friend/employee.

Trying to chase a goal that doesn’t fit you anymore is like sprinting in heels—they might look good, but you won’t get very far.

✨ The shift: Ask yourself, Do I actually want this—or do I want it because I’m supposed to want it?

2. Your inner critic is driving the bus

Let’s be honest: the voice that whispers “You have to do this” isn’t motivating—it’s paralyzing. If your progress is powered by pressure, it makes a lot of sense that your momentum fizzles out. Internal pressure doesn’t build results. It builds resentment.

✨ The shift: Try a softer inner script: “I’m allowed to move at the pace that is best for me.”

3. You’re stuck on advice that never served you

Remember when someone told you to “just do it” or “try harder” and it lodged itself deep in your brain? Often, the advice we’ve heard millions times over—especially vague or contradictory advice —can quietly sabotage your confidence and hijack your goals. Even if we know what to do, these messages play loudly in our minds and distract us.

✨ The shift: That voice might not be yours. Get curious – where is this advice coming from?

4. Your goal is fighting with another part of you

Sometimes we pick a goal that secretly conflicts with another deep desire. You want more visibility… but you also crave privacy. You want to grow your business… but you don’t want to burn out like last time. What can feel like self-sabotage is often two (very important) needs interacting in a tug of war. These aren’t flaws. They’re invitations to get more honest.

✨ The shift: Progress doesn’t have to mean abandoning parts of yourself. Ask yourself – what needs do I feel like I am sacrificing by pursing this goal?

5. The goal is too big to say yes to all at once

You’re not failing. You’re overwhelmed. That “big leap” goal might actually be a series of gentle steps—but if you haven’t broken it down, your brain is probably throwing up red flags and stalling out.

✨ The shift: Set up a series of small, doable goals, on a path toward your larger goal. And remember – celebrate each milestone!
